The A.R.T. Consortium presents an exhibition of sculpture by Bernadette Guitierrez and paintings by Houston artist Alex S. Arizpe.
Guitierrez creates surreal, grotesque and strangely beautiful creatures—sometimes human, sometimes animal, and often somewhere in between.
Arizpe’s paintings emerge from his experience as a two-time cancer survivor living with serious chronic illness. His distorted figures and visceral swirls of paint explore pain, mortality, physical limitation and the loss of self that can accompany illness and treatment. Beneath their initially gruesome surfaces, the works speak to tenderness, endurance and the struggle to become human again.
